Chilly Chilao

Earlier this year we did a quick camping trip up Highway 2 at a campground called Chilao. It was May, so we didn't expect super cold weather, but we were very unprepared for what awaited us! The higher we drove, the thicker the fog got. We kept hoping we'd break above it, or a mountain breeze would blow it off, or something else miraculous! But our camping spot was in the thickest, wettest, chilliest fog I have ever seen. Even at three in the afternoon we were bundled up in hats and jackets. In these wimpy little LA mountains! In May! I was not pleased. We drove off to hike to a nearby waterfall, just two or three miles away, and it was sunny, breezy and beautiful over there! But we couldn't relocate to camp there because it was a busy weekend and all the sites over there in Warmville were totally packed crazy zoos, which is so not appealing. So we went back to Freezeville to tough it out. We made a campfire dinner and struggled to keep the girls dry, warm, and happy. We thought we could handle it, but once the sun went down and it really got cold, the girls had had enough and it seemed so mean to torture them any longer. By 9 PM we packed up that soggy tent, laughed all the way home, and slept in our cozy warm beds. It was still a fun little adventure.
